History

Virginia Satir (1916-1988), one of the early pioneers of Family Therapy, was well known for her warmth and creativity in helping her clients. Today the Satir Model has continued to be developed and refined by other Satir practitioners. Among these efforts by various Satir practitioners, Dr. John Banmen stands out as a major contributor in making the Satir Model more relevant, effective, and teachable, especially in Asia, viz. Hong Kong and Taiwan, and in recent years in Singapore as well. He has trained a new generation of Satir practitioners in North America and Canada as well as Asia. These new generation of Satir practitioners have never met Satir in person, but who nevertheless continue to benefit from her genius and creativity as a family therapist through the efforts and vision of dedicated Satir practitioners like Dr. Banmen. Warren Tan and a few of his colleagues at Care Corner Family Service Centres were part of the new generation of Satir practitioners. Warren, a director with the Care Corner Family Service Centres in Singapore and later a family therapist in private practice, first learnt the Satir Model from Dr. Banmen in 1994. He was immediately attracted to the Model, found it effective and immediately started to introduce and teach the Satir Model to his colleagues at the Family Service Centre where he worked.

Since 1997, Warren made conscious efforts to introduce and train professionals and lay counsellors and social workers in the Satir Model in Singapore and Malaysia. He continued his leaming after his first encounter with Dr. Banmen in 1994, by going to Hong Kong over the next 3-4 years to attend training workshops and courses by Dr. Banmen, who is regularly invited by the Hong Kong Satir Centre there to train their professional and lay counsellors & social workers.

In 1997, Warren started the Post-Graduate Diploma in Satir Systemic Brief Therapy in Singapore and invited Dr. Banmen to be the trainer while he took on the position of clinical supervisor for the course. In the same year, he also started to go to Malaysia to train mostly lay counsellors at his two-days introductory workshops in the Satir Model. The first two Post Graduate Diploma in Satir Systemic Brief Therapy Programmes in Singapore were managed by C & S Consultation Services. As from April 2000, the Post Graduate Diploma in Satir Systemic Brief Therapy Programme is managed by Choice Makers Consultancy under the directorship of Warren. To date, close to 1,000 lay and professional social workers & counsellors in Malaysia & Singapore have had some training & exposure to the Satir Model.

Today the Satir Model is well received in Singapore and is also making its mark in Malaysia, particularly among lay counsellors in Kuala Lumpur. Apart from the one and a half year part-time Post-Graduate Diploma Programme and the two-days workshops introducing the Satir Model (Going Beyond Problem-Solving Series), there are other more specialised workshops like Training in Couple Therapy, Self Care For Helping Professionals, Coping with Losses in Life, and Certificate Programmes in Satir Systemic Brief Therapy (Chinese) and Clinical Supervision, most of which have commenced in the Year 2001.  There are also more agencies offering workshops and courses in The Satir Model.

It is our hope that The Satir Model will continue to excite and benefit many more people in future as each join the exciting journey of personal and professional growth.
